Child Proofing

Children explore their everyday environments in ways we never imagine which makes it vital that your home is "childproof". Below are some childproofing steps to keep your children safe at home.

Cabinet Latches:

HDR will install latches on the cabinets that are within easy reach of the children. The first priority is to safeguard children from substances such as cleaning fluids or insect sprays that may be harmful if ingested. We also recommend that the customer select several cabinets in which they store the "good stuff" including silver and crystal pieces to keep them out of harms way. Locking these items in cabinets also provides greater security in the event of break-in or earthquake. We have a wide selection of child resistant latches and other devices. Please ask your service technician for additional information.

Low windows and Stair Guards:

HDR recommends that a child-safe barrier be installed when the distance from the floor to the bottom of the windowsill is less than code requirements. This is often found in the living room or front rooms of Mediterranean style homes. We recommend the installation of Plexiglas type material or decorative metal railings on the inside of the window. The distance between any two parts of the metal decorative treatment cannot be greater than 4".

We will install a child stair guard at the top/bottom of the stair case(s).

Electrical Outlets:

HDR will install outlet inserts in each of the outlets in the house that are within a child's reach from the floor level only. HDR will install GFCI (Ground Fault Current Interrupter) in each electrical outlet located in wet environments including bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, garages and workrooms.
