- Check batteries in smoke detectors
in every bedroom.
- Check fire extinguishers in kitchen,
laundry, & garage.
- Inspect each chimney annually & clean
if necessary.
- Move flammable items away from
heater and furnace.
- Clean out the dryer vent from
the dryer to the outside.
- Check gas shutoff on each appliance
(is it accessible?).
- Evaluate an earthquake automatic
gas shut-off device.
- Check circuit breakers annually
for ease of operation.
- Check windows for ease of use
in an emergency.
- Install second means of escape
from second floor second
means of opening the garage doors.
- Do not use extension cords on
a permanent basis.
- Repair defective light switches,
outlets and lamp cords
- Trim back overhanging trees around
chimney.
